i know susan rice, worked with her in the john kerry campaign in 2004. she has the skill and the judgment to be secretary of state if president obama wants her to be. >> it's unfair? >> completely unfair. it's a tough town and lots of people want to be secretary of state i suspect. and the press has a role to play here, but at the end of the day i think if barack obama, who's just been rere elected, would like susan rice to be his secretary of state, she will be. >> steve, chip, happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving. >> also making news this morning, investigators say they're questioning people in connection with an explosion that killed two residents and virtually leveled a neighborhood in indianapolis. police say they have served search warrants, although they haven't made any arrests yet. sources are also telling "the indianapolis star" that investigators believe gas was intentionally leased into one of the homes and that blast may have been sparked remotely. >>> elmo puppeteer kevin clash is leaving "sesame street" after a second man accused him

susan rice went to the public and gave that to the public. when that information changed, the new information was given to the public. so i am not sure what they're looking for because i don't think there is anything beyond that. >> just to be clear, i'm not saying there's necessarily a conspiracy. what i'm saying is there was a lack of clarity. if the president was indeed clear that first day in saying that this was a terrorist act which by the way i don't think he was that clear, he was speaking generally, then why would susan rice a few days later not refer to it as a terrorist act? the fact of the matter is -- >> so the issue is the word terrorism wasn't used to the public satisfaction? >> one day it was vaguely described. the president saying that he referred to terror one day and then several days later the secretary or susan rice doesn't even refer to terrorism. she is talking about -- you can go right back to the video. the facts weren't clearly described from the beginning. >> isn't that an attack on our compound by definition an act

so i don't think that benghazi or some of the controversies surrounding susan rice is going to go a wway any time soon. >> it won't go away any time soon, but dana, what could cause stop the train when it gets going, because petraeus testified friday and didn't seem to stop anything, and so how do you put it to rest? >> well, sbitsing to see where the scandal goes, because it isless about what occurred there in benghazi than what was said on a television talk show on a sunday, and ultimately that sort of a scandal doesn't have legs. the actual policy issue, itself, is how well the compounds were protected and did things go quickly enough to protect the people there. that is largely a cia question, and largely something that will be resolved in the secure conference rooms where we won't hear what is going on there, and it is a political matter and the scandal won't go anywhere and it is quickly crowd out by much more significant things such as what is going on in the middle east right now. >> and what we are hearing is from people like saxby chambliss who says that he wants susan rice to

we saw a very strong defense on susan rice. do you think number one, we'll learn something from the hearings. do you think we'll hear a nomination for susan rice? >> well, it's the nomination that certainly seem to be what obama was hinting at yesterday, although he was clear he had not made the decision. that was an exthe record theirly strong defense in particular to accepting david petraeus' resignation so quickly. hopefully somebody will be heard about the libya hearings this week. hopefully not something tossed into the public domain the way it was on the house side earlier, which just became part of the election season. it's a serious issue. it largely involves the cia. these are not exactly things that could or should be on the front of the newspaper or the top of your broadcast. >> was the president hedging his bets by defending her so strongly should he decide not to select her? >> well, i'm sorry for me? >> yes, that's for you. >> it was -- it struck me as extraordinary the way he gave that full throated defense. ther
